We left Paradise to come here

When my husband Roger and I came to the Village a little over two years ago, we were leaving what many of our friends and colleagues considered to be “paradise”, namely northern California and a very nice home overlooking the bay on the Stanford University campus.  We had lived there for almost 35 years so we were very familiar with the area, the generally great weather and all the resources that such a university can provide.  We did avail ourselves of them, plus utilizing the proximity to San Francisco for pleasurable diversions.  Yet we felt, as we grew older and with both of us retired, that we first and foremost wanted a community.  Both of Roger’s parents lived into their nineties and we observed how increasingly isolated they became as their friends died and how it became more and more difficult for them to get around.  After his last parent died in the fall of l997, we became free to pursue retirement options for ourselves.  We had heard of the Academy Village and read about it, so we decided to attend an Academy-Village sponsored conference in the winter of ‘98.  We became very interested in the plans for the Village and went back home with a deposit on a lot.  We were enthusiastic about the wonderful people we had met who planned to join the Village.  And so here we are – enjoying the company of those friendly folks; liking our home with its lovely vistas and very livable layout, and finding the accessibility of a myriad of activities (both intellectual and physical) most stimulating.
