We are blessed with a true bounty of good friends

It’s all about the people! Of course, the houses are spacious and beautiful, the views of the desert and the mountains are fabulous in all directions, and the community facilities are commodious and comfortable; in short, the physical ambience of The Academy Village leaves little to be desired. But, it is the people that make it a truly unique place in which to live. The approximately one hundred current residents, with varied backgrounds in academia, business, government, and the arts, breath life into the many ongoing activities that mold both mind and body in new and vital ways. Musical concerts for the ear; lectures, courses, and topical groups for the intellect; and exercise classes for the bones and muscles - all are offered on a frequent and continuing basis, providing an incomparable palette to engage the individual to whatever extent he or she desires. And, it is the person-to-person interactions engendered by these activities that reveal the remarkable degree of compatiblity, cordiality, and shared ideas, interests, and concerns among the residents.

Authors : David and Alice Gutsche — We worked for 42 years in the Department of Chemistry at Washington University in St Louis. When David retired in 1989 as an Emeritus Professor he accepted a position as the Robert A. Welch Professor at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, which he held until 2002 when we moved to Tucson. Both in St Louis and Fort Worth we had good friends and lived thoroughly enjoyable lives. But now, in the Academy Village, we are blessed with a true bounty of good friends who are making our lives not just enjoyable but thoroughly vital and exciting. This is the real and enduring reward of this community.
